From Degree to Career

The academic year is coming to an end and graduating students will have to make a decision on beginning a career or continue their education before they leave Lynchburg College.

According to statistics from the Career Development Office, 81 percent of graduating seniors from the class of 2016 completed some kind of internship or field practice. The graduates from 2017 had 79 percent complete an internship or practice within their field of study.

73 percent of the class of 2016 secured a job within a year of graduating. While half of the graduates from 2017 reported that they had found work by the time of graduation.

Director of Career Development, Beverly Reid said “there is a slight increase in all of these categories for 2018.The biggest increase is in the number of students going to graduate school.

We believe this to be due to all the growth in the sciences and health sciences field.”

The class of 2018 only has a few weeks left to be an undergraduate student. Many students are in the process of finalizing plans for after graduation. Some students will decide that they want to begin their career while others may choose a different path.

Senior Sarah Schweitzer has found a job that she will start after graduation. The job hunt for her came easier compared to other seniors. Schweitzer said, “sometimes finding a job is about who you know and who you network with. That is what truly helped me get a job.”

Schweitzer noted “I think you should start looking for a job during your junior year. You

should start talking to people and then you can become more serious during your senior year. I started interviewing for possible jobs over winter break.”

Other students may decide to postpone the job hunt and take a year to pursue other activities like getting a graduate degree.

Senior Hannah Krause has decided to continue her education for another year at Lynchburg College. Krause, “believes education is an invaluable asset so furthering my education beyond a Bachelor’s degree was always in the picture for me.”

“I was willing to hold off on starting a career right away for another two years, because I believe I’ll be able to bring more to the table in my future career with a masters degree,” said Krause.

For students that are considering graduate school Lynchburg College offers different graduate programs.
